Superfly 2008 - September 12 & 13
Superfly
is a fundraiser for GAS and CTU. We hold this contest the first weekend
after Labor Day at the Almont Resort. Two person teams compete to see
who can catch the most inches of trout in one day using the flies
of their choice. Besides the fishing contest, the Saturday night banquet
includes bucket raffles, silent auction and door prizes. The entrance
fee is $500 per team. Each contestant gets a fishing shirt and cap
and meals: buffet breakfast, box lunch and a steak barbecue.
Friday
night starts the fun. This is where you draw your beats (morning and
afternoon), meet your guides (one
per team), and swap lies. Free beer and hors d’oeuvres are
served.
Saturday morning begins with a buffet breakfast at the resort. Then
you register and meet up with your guides to go fishing.
Prizes will be awarded for: Top team, top rod, and biggest fish.
Entry into Superfly
Teams can enter by downloading the application
form, filling it out and mailing it along with a check for $500
to Gunnison Angling Society. The deadline for entry is August 15,

Superfly Rules for 2008
TEAMS
- Teams will consist of 2 anglers who will fish together on one beat in the AM and one beat in the PM.
- Professional guides may enter the contest, but no more than one guide will be allowed on a team.
- Contestants may use two (2) flies of their choice for the day. The hooks of all flies used during the competition must be barbless.
CONTEST RULES
- Kokanee salmon will not count in the contest. Only trout or char caught during the time allowed in the contest will be counted on the
scorecard.
- No more than two (2) flies, in any combination, may be used at the same time during the contest. When changing flies, the monitor will check to make sure the hook is barbless before it is used.
- All fish caught under the scoring rules must be fair hooked in the mouth and landed by the contestant, not the team partner or monitor. The team’s monitor will then measure the fish to the nearest 1/8 inch. After release, the fish will then be recorded on the individual’s scorecard, according to the rules of scoring. All fish caught must be released safely or they will not be counted in the contest.
- The individual scoring the most inches for the maximum five (5) fish allowed, will be declared “TOP ROD” and the team with the most inches, “TOP TEAM”. An award to the contestant who catches the largest fish will also be presented an award and their fly, which caught the largest fish, will be declared that year’s “SUPERFLY”.
- In the event of a tie, the time of the first fish caught and scored in the morning will be used to determine a winner.
- The Superfly monitor for the beat the team is fishing will be the final authority for resolving any dispute or interpretation of the rules while on the stream.
SCORING RULES
- A maximum of five (5) fish may be counted on the scorecard for each contestant. Once a fish has been entered on the scorecard it may not be removed. At no time can a fish be caught and the measurements “held” while trying to catch a better fish.
- The first fish caught and landed on the AM beat MUST be measured and entered on the scorecard.
- During the duration of the time left on the AM beat, a second fish of the contestant's choice, may be scored on the card.
- Rules # 2 and #3 will also apply to the PM beat.
- One (1) “Wildcard fish” may be scored during the days competition. This fish, of the contestants choosing, can be entered on the scorecard only after the first two (2) AM fish have been scored. It is not mandatory to score this fish in the AM and ca be deferred to the PM beat and scored (only) after the two (2) PM fish are scored. Once the “Wildcard fish” has been entered on the scorecard it may not be removed and replaced by another fish during the competition. If no fish is chosen and entered on the scorecard by the contestant, then the last fish of the day may be measured and counted as the “Wildcard fish”.
History of Superfly
Jeff Oulton of the Gunnison Angling Society and Scott Ratcliff of
Colorado Trout Unlimited created the contest in 1989 and held the first
one in 1990 as a means of acquainting anglers with our local fisheries,
having a good time and raising funds for both organizations. Superfly
has generated considerable funds over the years.
